SUMMARY:Not Just Another Climate Summit: A Local Climate Leaders Collaborative
DESCRIPTION:Climate Caucus’ 2023 Summit registration is officially open! You can REGISTER HERE to attend either in person or online. \nThis important annual event brings together local elected leaders from urban and rural communities across Canada to workshop practical local climate solutions. \nFollowing recent local elections in BC\, Manitoba\, Ontario\, PEI\, New Brunswick\, the Northwest Territories\, and the Yukon\, our summit will welcome climate leaders who are newly elected\, re-elected\, and those who have left public office\, but want to share their experience with us. Accordingly\, our keynote speakers\, former Vancouver Councillor\, Andrea Reimer and former Edmonton Mayor\, Don Iveson reflect the value of sharing ideas not only across the country\, but also from one council term to the next.\nOur agenda for this year will leave you feeling re-energized about taking action in your communities. Alongside our session partners\, Community Energy Association\, ICLEI\, and the Co-operators\, we will deliver keynotes\, workshops\, and networking to address emissions reductions\, energy transitions\, and resilience at the local level. Our Hybrid setup will allow participants to experience the same sessions in parallel\, whether they attend in-person or virtually. \nThis event will take place the day prior to BC’s Local Government Leadership Association conference\, which is also at the Radisson Hotel in Richmond BC. We are pleased to announce that we will provide registrants to the Climate Caucus Summit with an access code for group rate tickets to FCM’s Sustainable Communities Conference happening later in the week\, from February 7th-10th\, 2023.

SUMMARY:Mobilizer Session: Public Art and its Potential - Reclaiming Underutilized Spaces for People
DESCRIPTION:From street murals to public performance to in-person and online art festivals\, arts-based placemaking has the power to cultivate a sense of belonging and connect people to community. It also has the potential to bridge gaps and break down barriers to creating safe\, accessible\, and people-welcoming environments. \nBuilding on the theme of reclaiming streets for people\, this session explores questions such as: How do we center community stories in the process of artistic interventions? How can arts-based placemaking transform neglected public places (such as laneways\, parking lots\, alleyways\, etc.) into thriving community spaces?  Who might be excluded from these spaces and how can public art initiatives better facilitate their inclusion? \nJoin us on March 16\, 2023 at 1:00pm ET/10:00am PT for Public Art and its Potential: Reclaiming Underutilized Spaces for People. This session will be hosted by Lanrick Bennett Jr. from the Laneway Project in collaboration with the HCI team. Together with Lanrick\, we will hear from practitioners across the country about their experience in facilitating arts-based initiatives – the benefits\, the challenges\, and the important takeaways. Bring your experiences and questions to join us in the discussion! \nRegister here!

SUMMARY:CUI CityTalk: How might office conversions revitalize the post-pandemic city?
DESCRIPTION:In the wake of COVID\, millions of square feet of office space sit empty in cities across North America. CUI’s recent report\, “The Case for Conversions: Understanding opportunities for conversion of office space to housing in Canadian downtowns\,” examines the barriers and opportunities for the adaptive re-use of office space across Canadian cities. As work from home practices persist and office vacancies remain stubbornly elevated in many downtowns\, there is an opportunity to re-imagine how these under-utilized assets could assist in downtown revitalization: bringing people and complementary uses to create more resilient\, diverse and equitable cores. \nJoin our panelists to explore conversions that are underway\, what makes them feasible\, how stakeholders are leveraging office space conversions to create a balance of uses in downtowns\, and what other initiatives need to be considered to revitalize urban cores. \nFeaturing: \nMelissa Román Burch – Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer\, New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYC) \nTracy Hadden Loh – Fellow at Brookings Metro\, Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Center for Transformative Placemaking (Washington D.C.) \nJoe Nickerson – Vice President & Partner\, Sidewalk Real Estate Development (Halifax) \nSteven Paynter – Principal\, Gensler Toronto (Toronto)

SUMMARY:Placemaking: What is it and Why Does it Matter?
DESCRIPTION:Whether picking up litter in the park with a community group\, organizing a public poetry reading on your block\, or enjoying public art in a local shopping area\, placemaking activities help us feel that we belong. Throughout the pandemic\, Canadian communities have experimented with using these types of public space and digital interventions in new ways\, calling on their resourcefulness to enhance mobility\, cultivate a sense of belonging\, and facilitate greater connection to each other. A growing number of municipalities\, nonprofits\, and community groups are now strategically bringing placemaking to the heart of their organizations. But what is placemaking and why is it important to support this work beyond the pandemic? \nRegister now for Building the Case for Placemaking: What is it and Why Does it Matter? happening on Thursday\, May 18\, 2023 @ 10:00am PT / 1:00pm ET. This 75-minute session\, hosted by Mitchell Reardan from Happy Cities and Mary Rowe from CUI City Talks\, delves into the well-being impacts of cultivating spaces for public engagement: What are we learning from our experiences over the past three years? Is there a super-power in community-driven change? How can we continue to build support for these incredible efforts? \nFeaturing practitioners from across the country\, this conversation offers an opportunity to hear from people doing the work about the role of public space and digital placemaking interventions in cultivating healthy\, inclusive\, and resilient communities. Register now for this free public webinar! \nClick here to register! \nThe session will take place in English with simultaneous interpretation in French. \n  \n
