SUMMARY:Cities for Everyone: The Walkable City\, 10 Years Later /w Jeff Speck
DESCRIPTION:‘Arguably the most influential living author in city planning\, Jeff Speck was the writer behind Suburban Nation\, The Smart Growth Manual\, and Walkable City Rules\, but his most popular book remains Walkable City\, which was published in 2012 and became an instant classic. Last Month\, the book was reissued on its tenth anniversary\, including a lively introduction from Janette Sadik-Khan and 100 pages of new text that brings it firmly into the 2020s. \nJoin Jeff for a quick review of the four steps of walkability followed by a taste of his new material (Uber-bashing\, anyone?) and a conversation with Gil and the audience.’ \nCities for Everyone with Gil (formerly A Walk in the Park with Gil) is a bi-weekly webinar series which focuses on creating affordable\, equitable\, and sustainable cities. \nIt always has fascinating guests do a 20-25 minute presentation\, a story with lots of images\, and then he has a dialogue with them and takes questions from participants. \nYou can register to future sessions and access to all previous at gpenalosa.ca. \nThis session is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Not Just Another Climate Summit: A Local Climate Leaders Collaborative
DESCRIPTION:Climate Caucus’ 2023 Summit registration is officially open! You can REGISTER HERE to attend either in person or online. \nThis important annual event brings together local elected leaders from urban and rural communities across Canada to workshop practical local climate solutions. \nFollowing recent local elections in BC\, Manitoba\, Ontario\, PEI\, New Brunswick\, the Northwest Territories\, and the Yukon\, our summit will welcome climate leaders who are newly elected\, re-elected\, and those who have left public office\, but want to share their experience with us. Accordingly\, our keynote speakers\, former Vancouver Councillor\, Andrea Reimer and former Edmonton Mayor\, Don Iveson reflect the value of sharing ideas not only across the country\, but also from one council term to the next.\nOur agenda for this year will leave you feeling re-energized about taking action in your communities. Alongside our session partners\, Community Energy Association\, ICLEI\, and the Co-operators\, we will deliver keynotes\, workshops\, and networking to address emissions reductions\, energy transitions\, and resilience at the local level. Our Hybrid setup will allow participants to experience the same sessions in parallel\, whether they attend in-person or virtually. \nThis event will take place the day prior to BC’s Local Government Leadership Association conference\, which is also at the Radisson Hotel in Richmond BC. We are pleased to announce that we will provide registrants to the Climate Caucus Summit with an access code for group rate tickets to FCM’s Sustainable Communities Conference happening later in the week\, from February 7th-10th\, 2023.

DESCRIPTION:In December 2022\, The Somali Centre for Culture and Recreation\, in partnership with the Infrastructure Institute at the University of Toronto\, released a report entitled\, Inhibited Growth: Examining Public Investment Gaps in Black Infrastructure Needs. This report examines the gaps in public investment and access to Black-led social infrastructure that integrates community centres\, recreational spaces\, and cultural hubs across the City of Toronto. Black communities across the city have faced persistent public disinvestment in their infrastructure needs\, such as inadequate access to city services\, recreational amenities\, and community hubs in areas with higher proportions of Black residents. \nPlease join us in person or online for this conversation featuring Isaac Olowolafe Jr. of the Dream Legacy Foundation\, Amina Mohamed of the Somali Centre for Culture and Recreation\, and Alica Hall of Nia Centre for the Arts\, to discuss how to build culturally-relevant and multi-faceted community spaces that are led by\, and serve Black communities. \nThis event is free\, open to the public\, and will be live-streamed for those not able to attend in person. \nLearn more and register here!

SUMMARY:Mobilizer Session: Public Art and its Potential - Reclaiming Underutilized Spaces for People
DESCRIPTION:From street murals to public performance to in-person and online art festivals\, arts-based placemaking has the power to cultivate a sense of belonging and connect people to community. It also has the potential to bridge gaps and break down barriers to creating safe\, accessible\, and people-welcoming environments. \nBuilding on the theme of reclaiming streets for people\, this session explores questions such as: How do we center community stories in the process of artistic interventions? How can arts-based placemaking transform neglected public places (such as laneways\, parking lots\, alleyways\, etc.) into thriving community spaces?  Who might be excluded from these spaces and how can public art initiatives better facilitate their inclusion? \nJoin us on March 16\, 2023 at 1:00pm ET/10:00am PT for Public Art and its Potential: Reclaiming Underutilized Spaces for People. This session will be hosted by Lanrick Bennett Jr. from the Laneway Project in collaboration with the HCI team. Together with Lanrick\, we will hear from practitioners across the country about their experience in facilitating arts-based initiatives – the benefits\, the challenges\, and the important takeaways. Bring your experiences and questions to join us in the discussion! \nRegister here!
