The Power of Placemaking: Evidence and stories on wellbeing

hosted by Mitchell Reardon & Leah Karlberg

Over the last four months, the Healthy Communities Initiative and Happy Cities have undertaken a participatory research and storytelling process to explore the Power of Placemaking. In particular, we’ve been considering: What are the effects and legacy of community-driven, place-based initiatives on our individual and collective wellbeing? What power comes from putting resources directly into the hands of communities and the people that know them best? How does capacity building across a broader spectrum of organizations help build social resilience? What have we learned after talking to over 100 placemaking practitioners over the summer?

This 90-minute session, hosted by Mitchell Reardon and Leah Karlberg from Happy Cities, will share findings of this research process exploring the intersections between placemaking and wellbeing. Together with Happy Cities, three HCI-funded initiatives—Missions Exeko,Rethink Red Deer and OurCommunityBikes—will share their stories, reflections and learnings on the role that community-driven initiatives play in our collective resilience.
