Let’s Talk About Placemaking was created as a resource to inform, inspire, and open new conversations around public space planning. Through project spotlights, policy innovations, and strategic insights from experts, the publication highlights the potential for placemaking to create thriving, resilient communities.
The Canadian Urban Institute is Canada’s national platform for the best in Canadian city building — where policymakers, urban professionals, civic and business leaders, community activists and academics can learn, share and collaborate from coast to coast to coast. CUI championed the community of practice, starting a movement of placemaking leading to Canada’s Placemaking Community.
Community Foundations of Canada is the national leadership organization for Canada’s over 200 local community foundations. Together with community foundations across the country, CFC helps drive local solutions for national change on the issues that matter most to communities.
Over the summer of 2024, Canada’s Placemaking Community worked together with placemaking practitioners and professional networks from Canada and around the world. Building on insights of the thousands of project examples between them, this publication aimed to gather a deeper understanding of the pulse of placemaking and bring field insights to a broader audience.
This effort by Canada’s Placemaking Community and its allies set out to unify and harmonize multiple definitions of the practice and highlight the impact and outcomes that can be possible when we place people and community at the centre.
