In metropolitan regions across Canada, efforts are underway expand opportunities to allow more housing diversity and meet the needs of their growing populations.
However, creating an equitable housing landscape also requires collaboration from the diverse residents and communities that make up the fabric of the city—including those whose needs and experiences may not be captured or understood in traditional community consultations.
Drawing from the City of Toronto’s Expanding Housing Options in Neighbourhoods initiative, whose engagement process was supported by the Canadian Urban Institute, this candid discussion will explore the importance of housing diversity for growing metro regions, the barriers to policy modernization, and how new engagement models can bring more voices to planning consultations.
